The Ultimate Guide to Finding and Fixing Pool Leaks in South East Queensland.
It’s a common worry for any pool owner in South East Queensland: you look out at your pool, and the water level seems lower than you remember. Is it just the strong Queensland sun causing evaporation, or is it something more serious?
This checklist will help you spot the common signs of a pool leak and decide on your next steps.
The Ultimate Pool Leak Checklist
Visual Checks Around the Pool
- Are there cracks or gaps in the pool shell?Pay close attention to the tile line and any visible plaster.
- Are there wet or spongy spots in the garden or lawn? Take a slow walk around the entire perimeter of your pool. Unusually damp, soft, or sunken ground can be a sign of an underground plumbing leak.
- Is your automatic filler constantly running? If you have one, hearing it run more often than usual is a clear indicator of water loss.
- Are tiles loose or falling off? A constant leak behind the pool wall can cause the bonding agent to fail.

Visual Checks Around the Pool
- Can you see any drips or wetness around the pump or filter? Carefully inspect all plumbing and seals on your pool equipment pad.
- Are there excessive bubbles in the return jets? A continuous stream of bubbles can indicate a leak on the suction side of the system.
Monitoring Water Levels
- Have you lost more than 6mm (approx. ¼ inch) of water in 24 hours? While evaporation rates vary, this is a good rule of thumb for our SEQ climate.
- Are you adding water more than once a week? If you find yourself constantly topping up the pool, it’s a strong sign you have a leak.

What To Do Next
If you’ve ticked off one or more items, your next step is to definitively confirm if the water loss is from a leak. The next crucial step is our simple yet effective Bucket Test.
